L.I. Towns - Nassau County

Note:   These were the easternmost towns of Queens County, until 1899, when they voted not to become part of Greater New York City (with the rest of Queens), and formed the new county of Nassau, in 1900.  North Hempstead was a product of the American Revolution, when it separated itself from Hempstead Town.

-- Hempstead (N.Y. : Town)       (formerly South Hempstead)

---  PMLCatalog Sampler:

-- North Hempstead (N.Y. : Town)

Note:  During the American Revolution, the northern half of Hempstead Town, which was more patriot-leaning, unofficially separated itself from the predominantly loyalist southern part of the town.  The separation into 2 towns was officially recognized and confirmed by the State Legislature, postwar, in 1784.  Prior to that, it would seem that under British occupation, Crown authorities preferred that the less populous north be dominated by the Tory south.
